Allergies in Dogs

We all know about season allergies for Humans, but we all might not be so well versed in the allergies common in dogs. Just like human immune systems, the dog’s immune system overreacts to foreign substances either allergens or antigens. These overreactions are manifested in three possible ways, itching of the skin, breathing issues along with nasal or eye related issues and finally digestively issues.

These allergies could be from, contact with allergen, fleas, a type of food, bacteria and an inhalant.

Contact allergies, are least common, the result from skin to allergen contact. Flea collars, and possibly types of bedding.

Flea Allergies, are very common, usually it results in only minor irritation, however sometimes it can produce a severe itching problem. Leading to a chewing or excessive scratching of oneself. These may cause open sores or scabs, allowing a secondary bacterial infection.
Treatment for this is first of all to get the fleas away from the dog, if this is not possible for some reason, corticosteroids can be used to block the allergic reaction and give relief.
Usually dogs are more resistant to the side-effects of steroids. If a bacterial infection occurs, antibiotics must be used.
Bacterial allergies, the symptoms can look like a hair loss area similar looking to ringworm. The usually treatment will usually be successful, but after a long period of time some dogs become resistant to antibiotic treatment.
Food Allergies are not common at birth but rather dogs develop allergies to food over time.
Usually caused by the protein in the food. Itching, breathing and digestive problems can result. Proceed to a vet and they will help you develop a diet for your dog.
Inhalant Allergies symptoms include sneezing, and breathing issues. Then these usually lead to itching issues, these can happen year round and possible depending on the dog it can last all year. Treatment can be any of the following:
1. Anti-inflammatory
2. Shampoo Therapy
3. Hypo sensitization
- has drawbacks including cost, the dogs age, success rate, food allergies and time of response.

Fireworks and Dogs

Dogs and fireworks just don’t go together. While we love the spectacle, the bangs, the sheer exhilaration of a good firework display, dogs in general find it a nightmare.
The big firework spectaculars are usually not a problem, unless you live very close to the venue. It’s the small local fireworks parties which are hard to get away from. If you have animals, the best course of action is to stay at home with them on the nights when you know there’s going to be a lot of local fireworks activity.
For more information on keeping your dog safe check out http://dogs.about.com/cs/generalcare/a/fireworks.htm.
Have a happy and safe 4th!

Created by custom doghouse design artists at La Petite Maison, this $30,000 red clay-roofed manse is large enough to accommodate a human and comes complete with terra-cotta floors. Who’s the lucky pooch that calls this humble abode home? This casa belongs to the pets of actress/model Rachel Hunter and is a scaled-down version of her California house.

Happy Mardi Paw

For German American populations, such as Pennsylvania Dutch Country, it is known as Fasnacht Day (also spelled Fausnacht, Fauschnaut, or Fosnacht).  The Fastnacht is made from fried potato dough and served with dark corn syrup.  Georgie celebrates with beads, a party collar, and an uncooperative mask that keep sliding over her eyes.

Lazy Dog Day

The Bark on Main's co-founder, Georgie, wanted to share a glimpse of her ruff life.  Georgie's leisure time is spent seeking empty laps, finding treats and waiting for the magic words...leash, car and ride. A dog's life can be pawsitively exhausting.
